Five Destination Weddings I’ll Never Forget

Couple embracing at their open-air destination ceremony

Why we travel

Destination weddings strip a celebration down to the people who matter most — and strip our work down to what matters most, too. No familiar venues, no second chances with the light. After dozens of weddings abroad, five in particular still come up in our studio conversations.

One — the Tuscan courtyard

Forty guests, one long table, and dusk that lasted an hour. We learned to schedule portraits around dinner rather than before it, and the couple got the golden light all to themselves. Read the full story in our Tuscan castle wedding feature.

Two — the Boston brownstones

A St. Patrick’s Day ceremony followed by portraits through parade crowds. Proof that a city in celebration is the best decoration money cannot buy. The full day is told in our Boston wedding story.

“Pack light, scout on foot, and let the place do half the work — that is the whole destination method.”

Three — the Caribbean shoreline

Barefoot vows at noon, which every guidebook warns against — and then a storm that rolled through at four and left the sky scrubbed clean for portraits. Flexibility beat planning that day, and the storm clouds made the most dramatic backdrop of our career.

Four — the Alpine meadow

A June ceremony at altitude where the weather changed four times before lunch. We shot the group portraits in a ten-minute window of sun and spent the rest of the day chasing mist through the pines. Some of our most atmospheric work lives in that gallery.

Five — the vineyard at harvest

Rows of vines heavy with grapes, dinner served between the barrels, and dancing that ended in the courtyard fountain. Destination weddings work when the couple trusts the place — and gets out of its way.

Thinking of marrying abroad?

Bring us early — ideally while you are choosing the venue. Light, logistics and timelines all change by country, and a photographer who has worked them before will save you from the classic traps: midday ceremonies, forty-minute portrait drives, and dinners scheduled straight through sunset.
